Review – The Emperor’s New Groove

Random doesn’t always make something funny. However, in the case of The Emperor’s New Groove, random means hilarious! In this nonsensical, wild adventure, I did not go five minutes without laughing. It tells the story of Kuzco (David Spade), the young Emperor of Incas who is used to being spoilt rotten. As you could imagine, having everything he could ever want, turns Kuzco into a cruel, vain leader who gives no care to the people of his empire. So much so he decides to build his holiday home on the one of the Villagers hills. This hill happens to be home to Pacha (John Goodman), a caring, warm family man who only wants to provide for his family. But when Kuzco’s adviser Ymza (Eartha Kitt) decides to poison the emperor only for her assistant Kronk (Patrick Warburton) to mix up the formulas and end up turning Kuzco into a llama, he must enlist the help of Pacha to return to his empire- whilst learning what makes a human. This film is a comedic masterpiece. Not only is it’s random, nonsensical humour actually funny( looking at you Minions), but the comedy can make anyone laugh. Whether you’re a five year old laughing at the fact that a llama is wearing lipstick, or an adult who is finding literally anything Kronk does hilarious- and rightly so. The film does such a good job of balancing the humour, and managing to appeal the humour to anyone who wants to watch it.

However, the film does struggle with its emotional moments, and undermining them with humour. It would’ve been nice to see some genuinely sad moments that weren’t interrupted with Kuzco reminding you that the film is about him. Nevertheless, The Emperor’s New Groove is without a doubt one of Disney’s funniest films and highly underrated too, I have seen this film countless times, and each time I still laugh out loud, that is what makes a good comedy movie and the Emperor’s New Groove is exactly that.
