Back to the future is my favourite film of all time. It has very few flaws and is one of the most rewatchable films in history. Marty McFly (Michael J Fox)- a lazy yet likeable teenager is the main focus of the film. Along with his best friend and local eccentric mad scientist, Dr Emmet Brown, Marty will embark on an epic adventure through time to get back to the future (pun completely intended). The plot can be confusing if you lose focus, although this is the case with any film which chooses to mess with time. Knowing this, the writers sensibly choose to not spend any more time than necessary explaining the science of time travel and more on how Marty adjusts to the environment of 1955-which is absolutely hilarious seeing how he reacts and how others react to him. My favourite example of this is how the students react to Marty’s rendition of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” which is just absolutely hilarious to watch their faces as he freestyles on the guitar. Its even more impressive to know that Fox actually learnt guitar for that certain scene.
In terms of the way Hill Valley in the 50s differs from the town in present really shows how much effort the set designers, costume and makeup team put into not only taking Marty into 1955 but the audience too. However, no film is perfect. Among a few plot holes(particularly a certain Chuck Berry joke…) one scene sticks out to me. I am talking about when George McFly has “Darth Vader” appear to him in a dream and convince him to ask out Lorrain. It just feels out of place with the rest of the film and I believe the film would have been just as good, if not better off, without it. Another thing I’ve always disliked is how Doc can feel so close to Marty in 1955(because this Doc has no recollection of who Marty is), despite the fact we hardly get to see them spend time together and bond. Although this does not distract from the entirety of the film. It is iconic, funny, at some points heart warming and overall a feel good classic!
