Popstar: Never stop stopping is by far the best film title to say out loud. It is also a hilariously good film. Whilst the humour might not be for everyone, if you appeal to outlandish, spontaneous, and sharp humour, then you will more than likely enjoy this film. The ‘mockumentary’ follows Connor4real (Andy Samberg), a rapper whose career is dying after he splits up from his group ‘The Style Boyz’. His latest project sees him attempt to release his latest album through kitchen appliances, and after backlash he needs to figure out away to stay his rap career. If the plot sounds crazy and far-fetched, it’s because it is. The film is so aware of how ridiculous the plot is and plays this to their advantage. It does this by HEAVILY empathising the humour and the unrealistic aspect of the film. It’s really hard to describe the comedy of the film in detail, due to the fact that the jokes are so frequent and constant that the film doesn’t give you time to recover from one joke because another one is already one it’s way.
Whilst comedy is a major factor for the film, the story is actually pretty well thought-out too. The story flows extremely well, and whilst it doesn’t do anything bold or ambitious with the storyline; it feels satisfying and well deserved by the end- unlike some comedy films. There are even some moments that I first interpretated to be quick jokes, but ended up having pay offs, or even better, actually adding a relevant plot point to the story. Another thing I should mention are the songs. Whilst this isn’t a musical, and they aren’t always front and centre, the songs are really good for the standard of The Lonely Island’s writing and if you listen hard enough, you’ll actually find some great songs.
Overall, Popstar: Never stop stopping (still fun to say) is definitely not a film for everyone, and if you have a very reserved or tame sense of humour, I advise watching anything but this film. However, if you aren’t offended easily, and are up for a laugh, I would highly recommend Popstar: Never Stop Stopping!
