Review – Thor: Ragnarok

Thor: Ragnarok single-handedly reinvented the character of Thor. Whilst that statement probably deserves an article of its own, Ragnarok may be my favourite MCU film. It’s hilarious, gloriously 80s-ified and most importantly, feels like what a Thor film should be. It picks up from after ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, and after returning home to Asgard, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) discovers Hela (Cate Blanchett), the Goddess of death and Thor’s long-lost sister, is planning to conquer his home planet. Deprived of his mighty hammer, Mjolnir (or Johnathon as some may call it), Thor must reunite with his not-so-dead brother #Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to take down Hela and reclaim the throne as King. One aspect of the film I am in love with was the 80s vibe the film went for. From the Flash Gordon inspired planet of Saakar, to the synth music that was embedded into the score- everything about this film screams the decade and it worked so well. The film was also written fantastically. The comedic aspects of the film are great, each character was charming and hilarious, and it was evident that all the actors had such fun bringing these mythical roles to life. One of my favourite characters of the film was the infectiously lovable rock monster Korg (Taika Waititi). However, some moments of the film had potential to be really moving and emotional, and sometimes the comedy undermined these scenes. The inclusion of Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk was great, his fight with Thor is one of my favourite fight scenes in a Marvel movie and Mark and Chris’ on-screen chemistry was brilliant- they perfectly bounced off of each other. One other thing that wasn’t as important, but brought me so much joy, was the use Led Zepplin’s Immigrant Song. The two times it was used in the film only elevated the action it accompanied and helps to create one of Thor’s greatest on-screen moments (you all know the one!). Overall, Thor: Ragnarok is one of the best Marvel films to date, with a stellar cast that will leave you in stitches for hours on end.
