Review – Wonder Woman 1984

WW84 is a great sequel to one of DCEU’s best films. The film stars Gal Gadot, who continues to portray the character of wonder woman fantastically. It takes place in (you guessed it) 1984, where Diana has adjusted to life and continues to save lives covertly. She now works curating artifacts until the Dreamstone is discovered. The stone is said to grant the user one wish but at the same time take away the thing that matters to them most. At first this plot device seems very Aladdin-esque and something pulled from a fantasy movie, but the way the stone is used by different people is so interesting. One of the people who uses the stone is Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal), a businessman who wishes to gain the stones powers and use it to his advantage. Lord is such an ambitious character and despite not been written the best, Pascal played him amazingly. The reason I say this is because he seems to want so much and at times it falls into the troupe of him just being a rich guy who wants to rule the world. Another person who uses the Stone is Barbara (Kristen Wiig), Diana’s clumsy co-worker who feels unseen by the world. When she realises what the stone can do, she wishes to be as ‘Strong and sexy’ as Diana. Unbeknownst to her, she also gains the powers of Diana. When Diana jokingly wishes for Steve Trevors(Chris Pine)to return from the dead, she is shocked to find him the next day. Seeing Steve discover the 80s is hilarious and I love the irony of him being the fish out of water this time, discovering everything from technology to fashion.

The biggest problem this film has, is there is no where near enough action throughout. Although when there is action, it is great. A highlight would be the fights between Diana and the Cheetah- it was interesting to see Diana against someone with the same skill set as her. Another great thing in this film is the CGI, from seeing Diana swing on lightning (which was awesome) to the invisible jet flying through a fireworks display. Overall, ww84 is a great film, but nowhere near the best of DC. And I won’t spoil the ending, but the post credit scene alone is worth checking out!
