Review – Black Panther

Black Panther is one of the best superhero films to date. It follows T’Challa (the late Chadwick Boseman), prince and (soon to be) king of Wakanda. After his father’s death, (which took place in Captain America: Civil War) we follow him as he becomes king of his secluded kingdom. However, trouble arises when Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) attempts to steal the throne. Boseman delivers an extremely strong performance, and really leaves an impact- especially after his passing. On top of this, Jordan is arguably one of the best villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as he helps the film break free from the typical ‘good guy fights bad guy and lives happily ever after’ that has appeared in multiple superhero films recently. This is due to the antagonist mentally affecting the protagonist and inspiring the black panther to change his ways- just in a less violent way. The supporting cast is also incredible, including Letitia Wright who portrays Shuri- T’Challa’s younger sister. She is a joy to watch on screen and the clear comedic highlight of the film. However, Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) seemed to be pushed off to the side. Her relationship with T’Challa did not get enough attention and it was a waste to see this great character not given the recognition deserved.

This film is visually stunning in terms of scenery, Wakanda is beautiful and honestly makes me wish I could visit it in the real world! However, there are a few moments where some CGI just seems rushed and it showed, particularly in the final fight scene. This does not take away from the beauty of the costumes used, they make the film a lot brighter and unique. Another phenomenal aspect to this film is the soundtrack. This is one of the best soundtracks ever used in a superhero film. It gives the movie a real flare and really improves the action scenes, and it just adds more to this already amazing film. The first marvel film with an all-black cast really delivered on practically all levels, and from the attention and love it received, it has widened the vast world of marvel to a whole new demographic.
